Clay over limestone & flint

The ground in El Dorado

East of Wichita the land starts to climb. Around El Dorado you’re at the edge of the Flint Hills: limestone and shale bedrock, laced with flint (chert), under tallgrass. On the hills the soil can be only a few feet thick before you hit rock; in the Walnut River bottoms it’s deeper and holds more clay.

Thin soil over rock is hard on a drain field because there isn’t much soil to do the cleaning. That’s one reason lagoons are common on acreages out here, and why a tank that hasn’t been pumped in years can push a field over the edge fast.

Permits and rules

Outside city sewer, Butler County regulates private sewage systems under its county sanitary code. Systems are inspected before they’re covered, repairs and replacements need a permit, and minor repairs or emergency repairs have their own notice rules. When a property is sold, the owner or the buyer can ask the county for a courtesy inspection; it isn’t a warranty, and it isn’t automatic.

El Dorado septic questions

Questions from El Dorado.

Why are lagoons so common around El Dorado?

Where the soil is heavy clay or thin over rock, a lateral field may not pass a percolation test. A lagoon treats the water with sun and wind instead of the soil, so it suits that ground, as long as there’s room for one.

Does Butler County require a septic inspection when I sell?

Not as a rule. Butler County’s sanitary code lets the owner or contract buyer request a courtesy inspection when a property is offered for sale, and the county issues a certificate with the results. Many buyers and lenders want a pump-out and inspection anyway, so ask your agent and lender what they need.

Can you find my tank if the lid is buried?

Yes. Tell us where the sewer line leaves the house and anything you know about the system. We locate the tank and dig to the main lid. A riser to grade afterward saves digging next time.
